What’s going to happen with High Variance: Season 2026

Sorry I’ve been MIA, I’ve got some updates

Happy end of summer, everyone. I apologize for the lack of college football previews here, and I don’t have a reason beyond “I had a lot of fun not writing,” this summer. The World Cup ate my life, and the comedown coincided with work ramping up.

For those who don’t know, this blog kicked into gear last year after my separation from Genius Sports and I needed something to maintain routine while looking for my next opportunity. I got incredibly lucky that the next role was right around corner, thanks to some really good friends.

I’m now almost a year in my role as Lead Product Manager overseeing Sports and Lifestyle at the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and let me tell you, this is the hardest I’ve ever worked. It’s more rewarding than anything I’ve done, but media isn’t an easy job for anyone, and that level of lock in means writing for fun is a lot less relaxing and, well, fun for me these days.

That said, I still care too much about college football, I still love Syracuse football too much, and will be continuing to cover Syracuse this season, but with some changes.

  • I will be moving this publication off Substack in the coming weeks. The alternative will require next to nothing from anyone following, but the whole point of putting up with Substack’s less than stellar content moderation and cut of subscriptions is that they help grow audience better than individual promotion. For me, that has not been true in any way, and the tradeoff is not worth it anymore.
  • I will mostly be writing about Syracuse football, with a slight scope expansion to the rest of the ACC and big national stories that have some impact on those two areas. I don’t really think I have it in me to be writing about national college football in that way, and I’ve removed myself from the Level Up Podcast for that same reason.
  • I’ve paused paid subscriptions to the site until all these changes take effect. Everything will be free until then (including my Syracuse football preview) and once everything is settled, I’ll bring back a paywall of sorts.

That’s all I got for now, content will be coming over the next few weeks leading up to Labor Day weekend, official* start of College Football.

*Yes, I know there’s Week Zero content, including the Ireland game, but c’mon.
